Is Free Wifi actually fit for purpose anymore?

With the the constant increase in mobile data capacity, speeds and allowance, are we at a point now where Free Wifi is no longer fit for its intended purpose?

Having had a few days travel with family recently, I tried to use Hotel and Venue free wifi to get a better signal than my mobile was getting, both times I was better sticking with the mobile signal and even, better hotspotting my laptop to my mobile to get any emails or larger data transfers complete.

In the modern age of Wifi everywhere, is this good enough? Is it even worth providing a service when its not actually usable?

I get that places don’t want to offer unlimited bandwidth, high speed connections for nothing – they want to sell you an upgrade… but come on, at least make sure the basic provision works.

Is it that places don’t care, or is it that they don’t understand what they are offering and how people’s data consumption has changed. What used to work as a service specked out and provisioned 5 years ago, is now woefully under powered with the modern internet. I don’t know and don’t get it, its not hard to upgrade things, yet its not done.
